Rail Intel is pleased to announce that Metro de Sevilla has joined the Global Light Rail Portal, strengthening its access to real-time global intelligence across the light rail and metro sector.
Opened in 2009, Metro de Sevilla operates an 18 km light metro network with 22 stations and is widely recognised for its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and passenger experience. The system has been carbon neutral since 2020, with 100% of its electricity sourced from renewable energy, including photovoltaic solar power installed across stations.
Metro de Sevilla has consistently led the way in digital transformation, becoming the first Spanish metro to introduce online ticket recharging, alongside innovations such as:
- Tap & Go contactless ticketing using EMV payments
- Smart post-payment, calculating best fares at month-end
- Telmo, an AI-powered chatbot supporting passenger enquiries
- Real-time station occupancy monitoring and air-quality management
- Enhanced wayfinding and customer communications via WhatsApp
“Innovation and data-led decision-making are central to how Metro de Sevilla operates. Access to clear, up-to-date intelligence on supply chains, emerging technologies and market developments is essential as we continue to evolve our network. The Global Light Rail Portal gives us a valuable, consolidated view of what is happening across comparable systems worldwide.” Jose Angel, CTO of Metro de Sevilla
By joining the Global Light Rail Portal, Metro de Sevilla will use Rail Intel’s real-time supply chain intelligence to understand who is delivering projects globally, track tender activity, and explore emerging technologies relevant to its network. Key areas of interest include ticketing innovation, platform safety, facial recognition technologies, and future mobility solutions.
“We’re delighted to welcome Metro de Sevilla to the Global Light Rail Portal. Their focus on innovation, sustainability and customer experience aligns strongly with why the portal was created. By providing clear visibility of supply chains, emerging technologies and tender activity across global metro systems, we’re pleased to support Metro de Sevilla as they continue to plan, invest and innovate with confidence.” Matt Johnson, CEO, Rail Intel
The Global Light Rail Portal provides continuously updated insight into systems that are operational, under construction, or in planning worldwide, supporting informed decision-making across planning, procurement, and performance improvement.
Rail Intel looks forward to supporting Metro de Sevilla as it continues to deliver efficient, innovative, and sustainable urban transport.
