Rail Intel is pleased to announce that Metropolitano de Tenerife (Metrotenerife) has joined the Global Light Rail Portal, reinforcing the platform’s role in supporting forward-thinking operators committed to sustainable, data-driven urban mobility.
Operated by Metropolitano de Tenerife S.A. (MTSA), a company 80% owned by the Cabildo of Tenerife, the Tenerife tramway system has been central to the island’s long-term strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable transport. Since the opening of Line 1 in 2007 and Line 2 in 2009, the network has played a vital role in connecting Santa Cruz and La Laguna while supporting economic, social, and environmental objectives.
The system currently operates 26 Alstom Citadis low-floor trams across two lines, supported by a purpose-built depot at El Cardonal. Metrotenerife has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation, including the early adoption of the Vía-Móvil smartphone ticketing system, introduced in 2013, and continued investment in network expansion, such as the planned Line 2 extension serving an additional 12,000 residents.
By joining the Global Light Rail Portal, Metrotenerife gains access to real-time global intelligence across light rail and metro systems, supporting benchmarking, supply-chain awareness, and informed strategic planning. The Portal provides visibility of systems that are operational, under construction, or in planning, enabling operators to learn from comparable networks worldwide and assess future opportunities with confidence.
As host of the upcoming European Light Rail Conference, Metrotenerife’s participation further highlights the growing importance of shared insight and collaboration across the sector.
Teresa Benet, International Business Development at Metropolitano de Tenerife, commented: “As an operator committed to sustainability and continuous improvement, access to reliable, global intelligence is increasingly important. The Global Light Rail Portal allows us to compare approaches, understand how similar systems are evolving, and support informed planning as we continue to develop and expand the Tenerife tramway network.”
Commenting on the collaboration, Andy Lucas, COO at Rail Intel, said: “Metrotenerife is a strong example of how light rail can support long-term sustainability, innovation, and regional connectivity. We’re delighted to welcome them to the Global Light Rail Portal and to support their strategic planning with trusted, real-time global intelligence.”
The addition of Metrotenerife further strengthens the Global Light Rail Portal’s position as a trusted resource for operators, authorities, and suppliers seeking clarity across an increasingly complex global light rail landscape.
As cities and regions continue to invest in sustainable transport solutions, access to accurate, comparable intelligence is essential.
Rail Intel’s Global Light Rail Portal supports this need by turning complex global data into clear, actionable insight for the organisations shaping the future of urban mobility.
